Ask anyone where to buy crackers and the answer is Sivakasi. But the fireworks belt is really three towns strung along one highway, and when we built a directory of every crackers shop in it, 1,753 of them, the two towns everyone drives past turned out to hold almost a third of the shops. If you are planning a buying trip, that changes your route.

What the data says

Sivakasi town has by far the most shops: 1,192 against Sattur's 303 and Virudhunagar's 203. Sattur's outlets cluster along NH44 on the Madurai side, so a family driving in from the north or east reaches them before Sivakasi town. We publish ranked lists built on public Google ratings, ordered by a confidence-adjusted score (a 5.0 from five reviews does not outrank a 4.7 from hundreds) with the rule printed on every page, as the best Sattur shops, the best Sivakasi shops and the belt-wide most-reviewed lists.

Why Sattur suits a family trip

Geography, mostly. Sattur sits directly on NH44, the Madurai-Tirunelveli highway, so its factory outlets are built for travelling families who pull in, buy and leave: display counters, parking and billing set up for retail crowds. Sivakasi town lies off the highway and its trade is heavier on wholesale and business buyers, so many of its counters are set up for the trade rather than the walk-in family. That is a difference in customer type, not in quality or price, and it is exactly why a family buyer often finds Sattur the easier first stop.

What about Virudhunagar?

Virudhunagar is the district headquarters and sits on the same highway, and its 203 shops include established traders. It has no retail cluster to compare with the other two towns, though, and its listings carry too few Google reviews for us to publish a ranked list; a ranking built on a handful of reviews would be noise pretending to be data. Buy there if it is on your way, but treat it as a convenience stop, not a destination.

So which town should you actually go to?

Family buyer on a day trip: Sattur first. The highway outlets cover a family list end to end, and the ranked list gives you a shortlist ordered by a confidence-adjusted Google rating, so the shops at the top earned it from many buyers, not a few.
Big or unusual list, gift boxes, fancy aerials: Sattur first, then Sivakasi town for the depth its 1,192 shops offer.
Trade buyer stocking a shop: Sivakasi town's wholesale counters and the belt's wholesale suppliers, where minimums and case rates live.
Passing through on NH44 with an hour to spare: Sattur, no contest. The best outlets are minutes off the carriageway.
